What is Drug??
Any substance or product that is used or intented to be used to modify or explore physiological system or pathological states for the benefit of the recipiant is called drug.âExample: Paracitamol,Aspirin,Ciprofloxacin,Omeprazole etc.
What are the types of Drugs??/What are classification of drugs??
- Over the counter ( OTC) drugs : OTC drugs are those drugs that are used/ supplied without prescription & relatively less hazardous ( toxic effects ), example : paracitamol,omeprazole,antacid,vitamin c, Iron,ORS etc.
- Prescription drugs: Prescription drugs are those drugs that must be prescribed by the registered physician and must be solid by the licensed pharmacist, example: anti hypertensive drugs,anti diabetic drugs,antibiotics etc.
- Control drugs : Control drugs are thosr drugs that can never be dispensed in prescription, example : morphine, pethidine,heroine etc.
- Experimental drugs : Experimental drugs are those drugs that are used for a selective or competent investigation, example endrophonium in myasthenia gravis, Berium Sulphate( BaSo4) in PUD etc.
- Official drugs : Official drugs are those drugs that are included in pharmacopoeia.
What are the benefit of drugs for the recipient??
- Diagonosis of Diseases :
- Barium Sulphate ( BaSo4) for diagnosis of peptic ulcer disease ( PUD).
- Endrophonium for diagnosis of myasthenia gravis.
- Histamine for diagnosis of pernicious anaemia etc.
2. Prevention / Protection of disease:
- BCG for prevention of TB.
- TT ( Tetanus toxid) for prevention of tetanus.
- Contraceptive for prevention of unwanted pregnancy.
- Premaquine for prevention of malaria.
3. Control of diseases :
- Insulin for control of DM.
- Anti-hypertensive drugs for control of hypertension.
4. Treatment / Cure of drugs :
- Antibiotics for treatment of infections.
- Antipyretics for treatment of pyrexia ( fever).
- Diuretics for treatment of Oedema.
- A drugs must have -
- Appropriate size, shape,electrical charge, & atomic composition.
- Appropriate properties to be transported from the site of administration to the site of action.
2. It should be inactivated or excreted from the body at a resonable rates so that its action will be of appropriate duration.3. It must have good . efficacy potency
